The outputs of 3 & 4 were patched into the record inputs of tracks 5 & 6. Then on each machine, the output of tracks 1 & 2 were patched into the record inputs of tracks 3 & 4. Both machines were accurately and carefully calibrated at 30ips, to manufacturer's recommended overbias, and at the same reference level (0VU=510nWb/m). I connnected up an Otari for the last time, but left one Studer connected machine number one was an A827, machine number two was an MTR-90. One tape-generation of music from a CD wasn't much for my own hear to make out any difference at all which I could trust to be un-influenced by what I knew, so -before we wheeled the Otaris out of the room for good- I tried a 'torture-test'. The studio owner came in and nervously justified all of this cash outlay by pronouncing himself 'knocked-out' by the 'incredible' improvement in sound, after simply recording a tune from a favourite CD of his onto two tracks, and listening to playback. In addition, we installed 48 channels of Dolby SR at the same time. The outgoing machines were MTR-90 MkII's all were 24-track. In the early 1990s, we were prosperous enough to re-fit one of our rooms with two A827's. We threw away the heads (that's why we decommissioned the machine!) so I really can't investigate further, but on the whole, I'd be inclined to 'pass' on the idea of getting it 'for parts'. You've prompted me to look at the '100 parts pile. Anyhow, '90 heads in good shape are worth twenty sets of '100 heads (or ANY heads, for that matter!) in bad shape. I doubt that they could be substituted onto a '90, but I've never even looked at it. I'm not a head expert, but I've just assumed that the 100 replay heads had a longer (or just more efective) pole shoe design. the heads on the '100 were significantly re-engineered, and seemed to be an improvement on the 90's low-end response. I've always been slightly more inclined away from over-complexity, but Dave raises a good point. I think the 100 might have been aimed a little more at the Studer A820 (with the auto-align, inbuilt NR, etc) as a sort of machine that you can 'option-load' like a luxury car. We have six MTR-90s -mainly Mk2's but a couple of MkIII's- but I've not found myself raiding the '100 pile for anything, -Now that I think of it that way, it's probably a compelling argument against buying a '100 just as a support for a '90.
